During the second quarter of 2021, zero-emission vehicles made up a larger percentage of new vehicle sales than ever before — 3.8 percent of total sales, according to an auto trade group. According to a new quarterly report on electric vehicle sales from the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, more than 168,000 battery, plug-in hybrid and fuel cell electric vehicles were sold in the second quarter, a 33 percent increase over the first quarter. That brought zero-emission vehicle sales to 3.8 percent of the overall market for the quarter and 3.5 percent for the year so far. Meanwhile, internal combustion engine vehicle sales decreased by one percentage point during the second quarter compared to the first quarter and nearly 5 percent compared against the same quarter a year ago.
