Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse is aiming to improve the siting of long-range, high capacity transmission lines today through a bill establishing a new federal siting authority within FERC that would have authority over projects with a capacity of at least 1,000 megawatts, cross two or more states, and facilitate renewable energy, reduce congestion or improve system reliability. Dubbed the SITE Act, the bill also aims to minimize eminent domain abuses in response to complaints that FERC doesn’t adequately take landowner rights into account when making permitting decisions. Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) will introduce the bill in the House on Friday.
