Support grows for NY wind
Long Island businesses, unions, environmental communities and elected officials joined with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to support New York state’s offshore wind plans.
The broad coalition came together at a news conference at the Long Island Association offices in Melville in advance of a public meeting hosted NYSERDA.
The meetings are part of NYSERDA’ process to create an offshore wind master plan, which is part of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s goal to have 50% of New York’s power generated by renewable energy by 2030.
The plan aims to create a roadmap for how the state can take advantage of the strong winds off the coast of Long Island and at the same time protect coastal and marine wildlife and preserve existing offshore industries and activities.
Representatives from both Democrat and Republican parties as well as from the National Wildlife Federation, NYS Building and Construction Trades Council, Long Island Federation of Labor, New York Offshore Wind Alliance and the Sierra Club were among attendees at the meeting.
