Electric vehicles in the United States accounted for nearly 5 percent of all light-duty vehicle sales and more than 20 percent of all passenger vehicle sales this past July, according to new EV sales data. Atlas EV Hub, a product of Atlas Public Policy, found that consumers purchased 59,606 EVs in July, nearly double the previous July high and second only to June 2021, where EV sales topped the charts. About 1 million overall vehicles were purchased in July, with the vast majority being light duty ones, such as SUVs and pickup trucks. “The trends for the EV market are record setting,” Nick Nigro, founder of Atlas Public Policy, said in an interview. “We’re entering a point where EVs are approaching mainstream acceptance in the general consumer market.” While Tesla Inc. continued to dominate the market — accounting for nearly half of all EVs sold in July — Nigro said competitors are beginning to catch up.
