Spokane mayor vetoes renewable energy law
KPBX-FM reports that Mayor David Condon cited concerns about electricity costs and potential liability in his veto letter Thursday.
The council approved a measure on a 6-1 vote last month calling on the city to prepare a plan to run its operations exclusively on renewable electricity sources by 2020, with the rest of the city meeting that goal by 2030.
The Spokesman-Review reports the council will consider overriding the veto at a later meeting.
Council members Ben Stuckart and Breean Beggs say the measure doesn’t create additional costs for the city.
Beggs noted that the council revised the legislation to meet Condon’s concerns and that the changes were supported by the region’s utility, Avista Corp.
