Governors' Wind Energy Coalition

October 6, 2016

State Representatives,

Here’s a brief update since we had to cancel this month’s conference call because it conflicted with the Governors’ Offshore Wind Summit. Our next monthly conference call is scheduled for Thursday, November 10, 2016.

Draft Briefing Memo for Presidential Transition Team.  We are identifying wind and solar-related topics for the coalition’s briefing memo for the presidential transition team. Those topics will also help shape the coalition’s work next year. We’ll share a working draft with you for your comments as soon as it’s done.

Governors’ Offshore Wind Energy Summit, October 24, 2016, Providence, RI.  As you know, Governor Branstad and Governor Raimondo sent an invitation to all the nation’s coastal governors inviting them to send a representative to the offshore wind summit.  Most states with significant offshore wind energy resources will be represented at the summit.  Senate and House congressional staff and U.S. Department of Energy officials will be participating, too.

The latest agenda is available here.  Please let me know if you plan to attend the summit and to accompany us on a boat trip to the nation’s first offshore wind farm near Block Island, RI, later that week.

Letter to President Obama Suggesting Administrative Actions.  Every year we send a letter to the President suggesting steps his administration can take to help states’ develop their wind and solar energy resources.  The last letter to President Obama was sent late last month.  Media coverage of the letter and the  governors’ message was very strong, especially the governors’ call for offshore wind development.

Washington Update.  Congress has adjourned and will return the week of November 7.  Congress will likely adopt another continuing resolution that will extend this year’s budget until the next Congress convenes in January.  And it’s unlikely that any energy bill will be passed this year.  There are some major provisions in the current bill on grid modernization that will likely be included in the next energy bill.

2017 Coalition Leadership Team.  The Coalition’s leadership team for 2017 will be announced later this month.
