German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she did not support proposed payments to loss-making coal and gas-fired power stations in Germany, dashing ailing conventional power generators’ hopes of receiving cash. Utilities such as RWE and E.ON desperately want government help through the creation of a “capacity market” to fund their otherwise unprofitable gas and coal-fired plants, saying they can guarantee supply and avert blackouts when there is a lull in variable wind or solar energy. Homes equipped with rooftop solar panels are often worth thousands of dollars more in resale than similar properties without solar, according to new Energy Department research.The study, led by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories alongside experts from academia and the real estate industry, found that homes with host-owned solar photovoltaic (PV) systems fetched an average of $4 in additional value for each watt of PV installed. The Center for American Progress this morning released a new poll of likely 2016 voters that it says found strong opposition to the energy and environmental agenda of the Republican leadership in Congress. The CAP-commissioned poll by Hart Research Associates surveyed 1,101 likely voters by telephone from Dec. 5 to 9 with a 3.1-point margin of error. The solar energy industry added tens of thousands of domestic jobs last year and will soon support almost twice as many jobs as the coal industry, according to a new report by nonprofit advocacy group the Solar Foundation. Solar companies added more than 31,000 jobs in 2014 and now employ about 173,000 workers nationwide, said the annual survey, released today.
