Three East Coast states with some of the nation’s most aggressive clean energy targets could see a political shakeup following next week’s elections, with broad ramifications for their reliance on fossil fuels and planned offshore wind projects. Maryland, Massachusetts and Maine are among several states where the party in control of the governor’s mansion could flip in November. In recent years, all three states have set targets to phase out greenhouse gas emissions economywide by 2050 or sooner, as well as interim commitments to expand renewable energy deployment by the end of the decade. Utility studies coal-to-nuclear conversion for climate fix

A Bill Gates-backed developer and one of the largest utilities in the Western United States announced Thursday they were launching a study to determine if up to five coal plants could be equipped with advanced nuclear reactors. The move further cemented the relationship between TerraPower, a nuclear developer, and PacifiCorp, a six-state utility headquartered in Portland, Ore. The pair agreed last year to build a 345-megawatt Natrium nuclear reactor at the site of a retiring coal plant in western Wyoming.

In California’s Wine Country, Some Towns Ban New Gasoline Stations

More communities in California wine country are telling gasoline stations to set up shop somewhere else. Eight cities and towns in Napa and Sonoma counties have banned the construction of new gas stations. The city council in Novato, Calif., located in Marin County, passed a ban in an initial vote last week and is expected to give it final approval in November. [ read more … ]
