Clean energy investment lags as oil and gas prices soar.

By Patricia Cohen, New York Times  •    •  Posted 2022-06-23 14:35:48

Oil and gas prices are likely to remain inflated for years given the uneven transition to cleaner energy sources, the head of the International Energy Agency said Wednesday. The push to end dependence on Russian oil and gas, coupled with efforts to battle climate change, has bumped up the pace of investments in green technology. But the increases “are not enough to replace fossil fuels,” said Fatih Birol, the agency’s executive director, which “may mean we will still see high and volatile energy prices for some time to come.” [ read more … ]

By MATTHEW DALY, Associated Press  •    •  Posted 2022-06-23 14:30:47

The White House is launching a formal partnership with 11 East Coast governors to boost the growing offshore wind industry, a key element of President Joe Biden’s plan for climate change. Biden and other top administration officials will meet with governors and labor leaders Thursday at the White House to announce commitments to expand important segments of the offshore industry, including manufacturing facilities, ports and workforce training and development.

Biden admin launches state collaboration on offshore wind

By Heather Richards, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-06-23 14:33:13

The Biden administration today announced a bipartisan collaboration with 11 coastal states to work on labor, shipping and manufacturing challenges for the country’s growing offshore wind industry.
Creating a national supply chain to support offshore wind — from manufacturing blades to building the enormous ships needed to raise turbines — is critical if President Joe Biden is to achieve his climate goal of 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030. [ read more … ]

Deadly heat wave’s lesson: ‘This is the future we all face’

By Ariel Wittenberg, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-06-23 14:34:07

The city of Portland was baking last June and Bureau of Emergency Management Director Jonna Papaefthimiou was in crisis mode. Sweltering in temperatures 40 degrees Fahrenheit higher than normal in a city where air conditioning isn’t common, Papaefthimiou tried every possible last-ditch effort to help keep residents cool and healthy.

Summer is here. Can the grid keep the lights on?

By Jason Plautz, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-06-23 14:35:21

As a heat wave grips large parts of the country and sets heat records coinciding with the start of summer, the U.S. electricity grid has held up. Even Texas’ electricity system — often in the spotlight for power failures during extreme weather — has managed to avoid significant outages despite setting power demand records. The question is whether that trend can hold if, as forecasters expect, sweltering conditions continue this summer. [ read more … ]

Big Oil and Environmental Groups Unite to Oppose Biden’s Gas Gambit

By Jennifer A Dlouhy, Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2022-06-23 14:33:45

Environmentalists say a gas tax holiday would only stoke more demand for fossil fuels while delaying a necessary pivot away from them. It would amount “to little more than yet another subsidy for the fossil fuel industry,” Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce said in an emailed statement. “Rather than helping oil companies pad their bottom lines even further,” Pierce said, Congress should “make investments in affordable, accessible clean energy.” [ read more … ]

Top Democrats won’t commit to vote on Biden gas tax holiday

By George Cahlink, Jeremy Dillon, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-06-23 14:34:52

Democratic leaders in Congress wouldn’t commit yesterday to a vote on President Joe Biden’s plan to suspend the federal gas tax. They instead suggested that the best way forward was to go after the profits of big energy companies. Biden proposed a 90-day suspension yesterday of the 18.4-cent-per-gallon federal tax on gas and the 24-cent-per-gallon tax on diesel to provide “immediate relief.” He suggested if the federal breaks were coupled with state gas tax cuts and increased refining by energy producers it could cut record-high gas prices by $1 per gallon (E&E News PM, June 22).

Manchin slams ‘stupid’ EV push, cites Chinese supply chain

By David Iaconangelo, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-06-23 14:34:32

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin criticized the idea of a national shift away from gas cars toward electric vehicles in lacerating terms yesterday, raising doubts about the fate of pro-EV policies being discussed in reconciliation bill talks. Manchin’s comments during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing on trade coincided with Manchin’s meeting with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) on a slimmed-down budget reconciliation package.
