By Katherine Blunt, Wall Street Journal  •    •  Posted 2022-05-11 15:27:36

The risk of electricity shortages is rising throughout the U.S. as traditional power plants are being retired more quickly than they can be replaced by renewable energy and battery storage. Power grids are feeling the strain as the U.S. makes a historic transition from conventional power plants fueled by coal and natural gas to cleaner forms of energy such as wind and solar power, and aging nuclear plants are slated for retirement in many parts of the country. The offshore wind hammer

BY MATTHEW CHOI, Politico  •    •  Posted 2022-05-11 15:26:14

The governors of New Jersey and Oregon are leaning hard into the Biden administration’s offshore wind goals, but acknowledged obstacles to their vision during the Aspen Ideas: Climate conference in Miami on Tuesday. Projects face opposition from commercial fishing interests and line-of-sight objectors, according to the governors. “We want to make sure that we’re not ignoring people,” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said. “Those [issues] are manageable in my opinion.” Oregon Gov. Kate Brown also identified transmission lines as a “huge challenge for the entire Western region.” [ read more … ]

Gasoline and diesel prices hit new records yesterday, touching off a war of words between President Joe Biden and Senate Republicans on the direction of the economy. The national average price for regular gasoline hit $4.37 a gallon, and diesel hit $5.50, according to AAA. Those are both all-time highs. Gasoline averaged $2.97 per gallon a year ago. The roots of the price spike go back to the beginning of the pandemic and will be hard to fix, analysts said. [ read more … ]

Last week, Keith Naughton and I broke the news that Desi Ujkashevic, a 31-year Ford Motor Co. veteran, joined the iPhone maker’s car team. Ujkashevic is the highest-profile move to Apple under the division’s current leader, Kevin Lynch. It’s the surest sign in several months that Apple is pushing ahead with its vehicle efforts, undeterred by a series of setbacks. [ read more … ]
