European Wind-Energy Sector Hit in Wave of Hacks

By Catherine Stupp, Wall Street Journal  •    •  Posted 2022-04-26 15:22:52

Cyberattacks on three European wind-energy companies since the start of the war in Ukraine have raised alarm that hackers sympathetic to Russia are trying to cause mayhem in a sector set to benefit from efforts to lessen reliance on Russian oil and gas. The companies attacked haven’t publicly attributed the hacks to a particular criminal group or country and Russia has consistently denied that it launches cyberattacks. But the timing of the attacks suggests potential links to supporters of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, said Christoph Zipf, a spokesman for WindEurope, a Brussels-based industry group. Cap and trade gets a big win in Pennsylvania. Will it last?

By Benjamin Storrow, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-04-26 15:17:12

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf (D) announced last week that his administration had finalized a regulation to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), a cap-and-trade program for power plants encompassing 12 Northeastern states. The move represents a massive expansion of carbon pricing in America — capping power plant emissions in one of the country’s leading electricity-generating states. But the Keystone State’s participation in the program faces immediate tests in the form of a lawsuit and a gubernatorial contest this fall. [ read more … ]

Pennsylvania reaches the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative starting line

By Elizabeth McCarthy, Utility Dive  •    •  Posted 2022-04-26 15:16:02

After two-and-a-half years of effort led by Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, regulations were published online April 22 that enable Pennsylvania to be the 12th state to join the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic program that caps carbon dioxide emissions from participating coal- and natural gas-fired power plants. As part of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, Pennsylvania will be required to make annual emissions reductions of 3%. The ceiling on the state’s power plant emissions is 78 million tons this year, equal to about 80% of the total allowances RGGI auctioned in 2021.

Greens groups’ climate Hail Mary

BY KELSEY TAMBORRINO, Politico  •    •  Posted 2022-04-26 15:16:22

“We have no doubt this is the last chance to get reconciliation done,” said Christy Goldfuss, senior vice president for energy and environment policy with the Center for American Progress. “We are talking years if not another decade before we get another opportunity. It’s either going to come together now around that framework that Sen. Manchin has said he has agreed to, or it’s over. We feel the finality of this across the climate movement.” [ read more … ]

Manchin Explores Possibility of Energy, Climate Package With GOP

By Steven T. Dennis, Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2022-04-26 15:17:53

Democratic Senator Joe Manchin is exploring an energy and climate package aimed at winning enough Republican support to skirt the partisan budget reconciliation process that has held hostage hundreds of billions of dollars in potential spending on related priorities. “If I can find something bipartisan, we don’t need reconciliation,” Manchin, of West Virginia, said in an interview on Monday. Manchin energy mantra collides with reality in W.Va.

By Scott Waldman, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-04-26 15:17:33

When Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) explains why he has blocked key parts of the president’s climate agenda, he often points to his support for an “all-of-the-above energy” strategy. In recent months, Manchin sank President Joe Biden’s $1.7 trillion social and climate spending package, jettisoned a high-profile nominee for the Federal Reserve, and objected to a plan by the Securities and Exchange Commission to increase corporate accountability for global warming risks. None of them supported his all-of-the-above energy vision, Manchin said each time. [ read more … ]

U.S. energy secretary says oil, gas output will continue to increase

By Timothy Gardner and Doina Chiacu, Reuters  •    •  Posted 2022-04-26 15:16:45

The U.S. Energy Secretary said on Monday U.S. oil and gas production is rising and will continue to rise to make up for the 1 to 1.5 million barrels of oil per day that has been pulled off the market in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Jennifer Granholm told CNBC the boost in U.S. oil to market will be about 1 million barrels per day, first coming from President Joe Biden’s record release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve starting in May and lasting six months.

GM Pushes Electric Drive With Plans for Battery-Powered Corvette – Bloomberg

By David Welch, Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2022-04-26 15:18:14

Here’s a clear sign that internal combustion engines are on the long road to oblivion: The Corvette is going electric. General Motors Co. President Mark Reuss said Monday in a LinkedIn post that the automaker’s nearly 70-year-old sports car will offer a hybrid model as soon as next year with an electric motor and gasoline engine. An all-electric version using GM’s Ultium battery will follow, though he didn’t specify a timeline.  [ read more … ]
