A ‘New Era of Air Pollution’ in the Tropics Could Have a Huge Toll

By Maggie Astor, New York Times  •    •  Posted 2022-04-11 15:44:48

Urban air pollution in the tropics is rapidly increasing and will lead to hundreds of thousands of preventable deaths if stronger regulations are not put in place, according to a new study. Some 180,000 premature deaths in large tropical cities in 2018 alone were attributable to increased exposure to pollutants since 2005, according to researchers at University College London. That number, they noted, is made all the more alarming by the fact that nearly three-quarters of megacities, those with 10 million or more residents, are expected to be in the tropics by the end of the 21st century [ read more … ]

Seattle developer pushes for WA’s first floating offshore wind farm off Olympic Peninsula

By Nicholas Turner, Seattle Times  •    •  Posted 2022-04-11 15:43:28

Offshore wind energy on the Pacific Ocean has long been dismissed as a pipe dream due to the abrupt drop-off along the edges of its continental shelf. But floating wind turbines could change that. Trident Winds, a wind energy developer based in Seattle, submitted an unsolicited lease request Monday to the Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management to build a floating offshore wind farm — the state’s first — about 43 miles off the coast of the Olympic Peninsula, near Grays Harbor. Offshore wind report says Delaware could procure power at less than half current cost

By Jon Hurdle, Delaware Public Media  •    •  Posted 2022-04-11 15:44:11

Delaware could buy offshore wind power at less than half the cost it currently pays for fossil fuel-powered electricity, after the health and climate impacts of the current supply are taken into account, according to a University of Delaware report for the state, released Thursday. The long-awaited report from UD’s Special Initiative on Offshore Wind made no recommendations but calculated that wholesale cost of power currently purchased by Delmarva Power is within the range of offshore wind power that will be purchased by Maryland and Massachusetts, two of the East Coast states that have committed to buying specific quantities of electricity from planned wind farms. Solar panels that can generate electricity at night have been developed at Stanford

By Rina Torchinsky, NPR  •    •  Posted 2022-04-11 15:43:07

While standard solar panels can provide electricity during the day, this device can serve as a “continuous renewable power source for both day- and nighttime,” according to the study published this week in the journal Applied Physics Letters. The device incorporates a thermoelectric generator, which can pull electricity from the small difference in temperature between the ambient air and the solar cell itself. [ read more … ]

Pennsylvania governor appeals RGGI pause to state’s highest court

BY: JORDAN WOLMAN, Politico  •    •  Posted 2022-04-11 15:43:51

Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration has appealed a lower court’s injunction that temporarily stopped Pennsylvania from publishing a regulation to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative. Patrick McDonnell, the state’s head of the Department of Environmental Protection, filed the appeal Thursday to the state Supreme Court. Pennsylvania’s Commonwealth Court on Tuesday blocked the Legislative Reference Bureau from publishing the RGGI regulation, which it had planned to do on Saturday. The court did not explain the reason for issuing the injunction. [ read more … ]

Activists Shut London’s Tower Bridge Before Mass Climate Protest

By Ryan Hesketh, Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2022-04-11 15:44:26

Supporters of the environmental action group Extinction Rebellion blocked London’s Tower Bridge on Friday, a day before mass protests are scheduled to sweep the U.K. capital. Demonstrators hung a giant banner carrying the slogan “End Fossil Fuels Now” from the bridge, bringing traffic across a main gateway to the City of London to a standstill. Two people used suspension cords to abseil from the London landmark and release red flares.

California moves closer toward phasing out gas cars

By Anne C. Mulkern, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-04-11 15:46:11

California is expected this week to take a significant step toward its goal of phasing out gas-fueled vehicles. The California Air Resources Board is slated tomorrow to release documents in support of its plan to require that, starting in 2035, all new cars sold in the state must be zero-emissions vehicles. “It’s probably one of the biggest actions that the state will take this year in terms of reducing emissions,” said Dave Reichmuth, senior engineer at the Union of Concerned Scientists.
