Wind and solar generated a record 10% of the world’s power in 2021, report shows

By Story by Reuters and Angela Dewan, CNN Business  •    •  Posted 2022-03-30 14:40:16

The world generated a record 10% of its electricity from wind and solar in 2021 and clean sources accounted for 38% of total power supply — even more than coal. That’s according to a report published on Wednesday by Ember. The independent climate think tank found that 50 countries were generating more than 10% of their power from wind and solar, with the fastest transformations happening in the Netherlands, Australia and Vietnam. Battery Storage

Calif. sprints to install batteries but can’t find parts

By Benjamin Storrow, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-03-30 14:40:57

California is racing to add batteries to its electric grid in an attempt to prevent blackouts, cut greenhouse gas emissions and prepare for the closure of the state’s only nuclear power plant in 2025. A plan finalized by state regulators last month calls for almost quintupling California’s storage capacity over the next four years. But the Golden State faces significant hurdles that could scramble its plans. Shipping bottlenecks have delayed construction of new projects. Demand for raw materials used in lithium-ion batteries, which account for the vast majority of utility-scale projects, outstrips supply. And permitting and connecting all those new batteries to the grid is a difficult puzzle itself. [ read more … ]

Biden Administration

DOE details plans for revamping clean energy

By David Iaconangelo, Carlos Anchondo, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-03-30 14:41:26

The Biden’s administration’s fiscal 2023 budget proposal — which would fund the Energy Department at $48.2 billion, up from nearly $44.9 billion in current spending — is likely to be altered significantly by Congress. But it provides a snapshot of the administration’s priorities, including plans for carbon capture, methane, renewables, electric vehicles and hydrogen technologies.

Gov. Greg Abbott touts renewable energy in speech to U.S. business leaders

By Jeremy Wallace, Houston Chroncile  •    •  Posted 2022-03-30 14:42:28

Abbott called Texas an international leader in wind power and predicted it will be the No. 1 state for solar energy by the end of the year. It was a very different tone from a year ago when Abbott appeared to blame renewable energy sources — specifically wind turbines — for failing during the 2021 winter storm that left millions of Texans without power and resulted in more than 200 cold-related deaths. US transition to electric vehicles would save over 100,000 lives by 2050 – study

By Nina Lakhani, The Guardian  •    •  Posted 2022-03-30 14:41:51

A speedy nationwide transition to electric vehicles powered by renewable energy would save more than 100,000 American lives and $1.2tn in public health costs over the next three decades, according to a new report. Analysis by the American Lung Association highlights the public health damage caused by the world’s dependence on dirty fossil fuels, and provides a glimpse into a greener, healthier future – should political leaders decide to act. EVs: The next grid battery for renewables?

By Peter Behr, E&E News  •    •  Posted 2022-03-30 14:42:07

Around noon on Fridays, as a yoga class heats up at a recreation center in Boulder, Colo., electricity flows in from a Nissan Leaf plugged in behind the facility, cutting the city’s utility bill by about $270 a month, or roughly what it costs to lease the car, Boulder official Matthew Lehrman says. The results of this experiment are making a potent point about the nation’s clean energy future, demonstrating vehicle-to-building power supply for controlling electricity costs and extending the reach of wind and solar power, according to David Slutzky, founder and chief executive of Fermata Energy, developer of the software that manages the power transfer.
