When OPEC barred oil exports to the United States in 1973, creating long gasoline lines, President Richard Nixon pledged an effort that would combine the spirit of the Apollo program and the determination of the Manhattan Project. “By the end of this decade, we will have developed the potential to meet our own energy needs without depending on any foreign energy sources,” he said in a televised address. His timing was off — it took more than 40 years — but the country has come pretty close to energy independence in recent years thanks to a surge in domestic shale oil and natural gas production and the harnessing of solar and wind energy. Biden Considering Point-of-Sale Rebates for Electric Car Buyers

The Biden administration wants to give consumers rebates for purchasing electric vehicles to help the U.S. compete against China in manufacturing the next generation of automobiles, White House Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy said. President Joe Biden is “looking to invest more than $170 billion and he’s going to build out the electric charging stations that we need for consumers to buy these vehicles and feel confident that they can get where they want to go and back again. “He’s looking at actually providing consumer rebates at the point of sale,” she said.

White House Set to Unveil Climate Finance Plan on Thursday

President Joe Biden on Thursday is expected to order his administration to create a strategy to quantify risks for both public and private financial assets posed by climate change, according to people familiar with the matter. The executive order will direct Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, as head of the Financial Stability Oversight Council, to share climate-related financial risk data and issue a report, the people said, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Colonial Pipeline CEO Tells Why He Paid Hackers a $4.4 Million Ransom

The operator of the Colonial Pipeline learned it was in trouble at daybreak on May 7, when an employee found a ransom note from hackers on a control-room computer. By that night, the company’s chief executive came to a difficult conclusion: He had to pay. Joseph Blount, CEO of Colonial Pipeline Co., told The Wall Street Journal that he authorized the ransom payment of $4.4 million because executives were unsure how badly the cyberattack had breached its systems or how long it would take to bring the pipeline back.
