Biden Pushes Offshore Wind Power, But California Might Miss First Wave

By Ed Fletcher, California Public Radio  •    •  Posted 2021-04-08 14:31:57

The Biden administration is pushing to dramatically expand the utilization of offshore wind as a source of green energy. A March executive order proclaims the “offshore wind industry will drive new jobs and economic opportunity up and down the Atlantic Coast, in the Gulf of Mexico, and in Pacific waters.” Despite that, California might miss out on the early opportunities from this initiative. One reason is that the state’s steep ocean shelf makes anchoring turbines to the floor impractical. [ read more … ]

By Somini Sengupta, New York Times  •    •  Posted 2021-04-08 14:34:11

How does a country deal with climate disasters when it’s drowning in debt? Not very well, it turns out. Especially not when a pandemic clobbers its economy. Take Belize, Fiji and Mozambique. Vastly different countries, they are among dozens of nations at the crossroads of two mounting global crises that are drawing the attention of international financial institutions: climate change and debt. White House Considering Nearly Doubling Obama’s Climate Pledge

By Ari Natter, Jennifer A Dlouhy and Will Wade, Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2021-04-08 14:30:55

The White House is considering a pledge to cut U.S. greenhouse-gas emissions by 50% or more by the end of the decade, according to people familiar with the deliberations, a target that would nearly double the country’s previous commitment and require dramatic changes in the power, transportation and other sectors. The emissions-reduction goal, which is still being developed and subject to change, is part of a White House push to encourage worldwide action to keep average global temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) from pre-industrial levels. Biofuels producers, farmers not sold on switch to electric

By Scott McFetridge, Associated Press  •    •  Posted 2021-04-08 14:31:25

The president and auto industry maintain the nation is on the cusp of a gigantic shift to electric vehicles and away from liquid-fueled cars, but biofuels producers and some of their supporters in Congress aren’t buying it. They argue that now is the time to increase sales of ethanol and biodiesel, not abandon them. To help address climate change, President Joe Biden has proposed an infrastructure plan that includes billions of dollars to pay for 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations, electrify public vehicles and enhance the nation’s power grid. These moves follow initiatives in California and other states to mandate electric vehicle sales and a goal by General Motors to shift production fully to electric vehicles by 2035. [ read more … ]

Two of the world’s largest electric-vehicle battery makers have hired top Washington insiders to hold near-daily meetings with the Biden administration in a battle that could affect the electrification plans of Ford Motor Co. and Volkswagen AG. SK Innovation Co., Ford’s battery supplier for its upcoming electric F-150 pickup truck, faces a 10-year U.S. import ban on its Korean-made batteries and components after April 11. SK Innovation has engaged such well-connected advocates as former EPA chief Carol Browner and one-time Acting Attorney General Sally Yates to convince the administration to intervene.
