Fossil Fuel Pollution Kills 8.7 Million a Year, Twice Previous Estimate

By Eric Roston, Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2021-02-09 15:11:29

The results underscore a fact absent from much public debate and discussion about climate change. While the fight to stop greenhouse gas pollution by curtailing fossil fuel use is framed in terms of how it would improve the future, it’s also true that fossil fuels are killing millions of people right now. That’s how Aaron Bernstein, interim director of the Center for Climate Health and the Global Environment at Harvard’s Chan School of Public Health, understands the new research. [ read more … ]

Study finds more PM deaths from fossil fuels

BY KELSEY TAMBORRINO, Politico  •    •  Posted 2021-02-09 15:12:28

Burning fossil fuels causes more premature deaths around the world than previous research suggested, according to new research in the journal Environmental Research. The study , conducted by British and American researchers and funded partly by the Wallace Global Fund, uses recent studies on fine particulate matter exposure to estimate the health impacts of fossil fuel-related PM2.5 (filtering out PM from natural and biogenic sources). The researchers estimated a global premature mortality of 8.7 million annually from fossil fuel-derived PM2.5 emissions. [ read more … ]

Fossil fuel pollution causes one in five premature deaths globally: study

By Matthew Green, Reuters  •    •  Posted 2021-02-09 15:12:06

Pollution from fossil fuels causes one in five premature deaths globally, suggesting the health impacts of burning coal, oil and natural gas may be far higher than previously thought, according to a study published on Tuesday. Parts of China, India, Europe and the northeastern United States are among the hardest-hit areas, suffering a disproportionately high share of 8.7 million annual deaths attributed to fossil fuels, the study published in the journal Environmental Research found. Wyoming’s wind energy capacity almost doubled in 2020

By CAMILLE ERICKSON, Billings Gazette  •    •  Posted 2021-02-09 15:13:10

The wind energy sector in the U.S. shattered records in 2020, recording its biggest year yet in terms of new capacity added to the grid. Last year, 16,913 megawatts of new wind power capacity was installed in the U.S. — an 85% increase compared to 2019. That’s according to a new quarterly report compiled by the American Clean Power Association on Thursday. Wyoming played a big part in helping the country’s wind energy fleet reach new heights.

Two giant oil companies won the largest share of options to build new offshore wind farms awarded by Britain on Monday, investments that are expected to eventually total in the tens of billions of dollars. The options were a big move by major petroleum producers into an industry that has for years been dominated by smaller, specialized companies. [ read more … ]

Big Business squirms as Biden tightens climate regulations

By ZACHARY WARMBRODT, Politico  •    •  Posted 2021-02-09 15:14:16

Corporate America is entering the Biden era with bold public pledges to fight climate change. But as Democrats seek to hold businesses to those promises, they’re facing a big battle. Democrats are vowing to go through the Securities and Exchange Commission to impose sweeping financial disclosure rules on climate risk that would force thousands of businesses including banks, manufacturers and energy producers to divulge information to investors. Lenders are set to get even more scrutiny from their own regulators like the Federal Reserve, including potential stress tests to measure their resiliency to rising sea levels and extreme weather. Now, the backlash is beginning. [ read more … ]

Court pauses California waiver fight

BY KELSEY TAMBORRINO, Politico  •    •  Posted 2021-02-09 15:13:54

A federal court suspended litigation Monday over the Trump administration’s revocation of the California Clean Air Act waiver that had allowed the state to regulate carbon dioxide from vehicles, handing the Biden administration time to reverse the action. The abeyance comes despite the request from a coalition of Republican attorneys general for the court to move forward with arguments, since the case was fully briefed. [ read more … ]
