R.I. faces daunting challenge meeting Raimondo’s 100% renewable energy goal

By Alex Kuffner, Providence Journal  •    •  Posted 2020-07-12 04:27:03

Even if Rhode Island is able to reach Gov. Gina Raimondo’s goal of meeting all of its electric demand with renewable energy by the end of the decade, it won’t mean the end of the state’s work to develop more solar, offshore wind and other power sources that don’t produce carbon emissions. That’s because the goal — which is aimed at reducing the greenhouse gases that cause climate change — is a moving target. [ read more … ]

Rooftop revolution: Coronavirus chill upends solar power industry

By Nichola Groom, Reuters  •    •  Posted 2020-07-12 04:27:28

The booming rooftop solar panel industry nosedived overnight when the coronavirus forced homeowners to rein in spending and keep their distance from would-be installers. Now, in their struggle to survive, companies on both sides of the Atlantic are turning to online marketing rather than knocking on doors, using drones to inspect roofs, arranging digital permits and coming up with attractive new financing plans, according to interviews with 12 executives. DC circuit court upholds FERC’s energy storage rule

By Josh Siegel, Washington Examiner  •    •  Posted 2020-07-12 04:28:17

The D.C. Circuit Court on Friday upheld a landmark order from FERC removing long-standing barriers to energy storage in power markets, a decision that commission chairman Neil Chatterjee called a “very significant victory” that would enable the growth of renewables. “Removing barriers to storage in our markets has been one of our top priorities,” Chatterjee said on a call with reporters in which he recapped FERC’s two-day conference this week on the impact of the pandemic on the energy industry. “We may look down the road and say this was one of the most significant actions taken by a government agency to address carbon mitigation.”  [ read more … ]

Why the Larger Climate Movement Is Finally Embracing the Fight Against Environmental Racism

By Justin Worland, Time  •    •  Posted 2020-07-12 04:29:38

The 2019 fire at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery started with a simple failure: one leaky elbow pipe in a 1,400-acre facility covered with pipes, tanks and industrial towers. Within a few hours last June, enough gaseous propane had seeped into the air to ignite the facility into a fiery hellscape with an explosion hurling human-size pieces of industrial equipment into the air and shaking the ground miles away. Workers rapidly shut down the facility, which had for decades converted crude oil into usable products. The workers escaped with only a few minor injuries, but the facility had already spent decades killing its neighbors in South Philadelphia [ read more … ]

Trump Administration Seeks to Block Settlement Between Sierra Club and Michigan Utility

By Timothy Puko, Wall Street Journal  •    •  Posted 2020-07-12 04:29:09

The Trump administration is asking a federal judge to reject a settlement between the Sierra Club and a Michigan utility over alleged clean-air violations, arguing that the deal improperly goes beyond what the federal government has approved. The motion, filed late Wednesday, asks a U.S. district court in Michigan to reject a settlement that would require Detroit-based utility DTE Energy Co. to close three coal-fired power plants and pay $2 million for local environmental improvements.

The Sierra Club is launching a five-figure digital ad buy today that calls on Republican Sens. Cory Gardner (Colo.), Martha McSally (Ariz.), Joni Ernst (Iowa) and Pat Toomey (Pa.) to ensure clean energy jobs in their states are protected.
