Climate Change Fuels U.S. Dust Storms With Dire Health Consequences

The phenomenon, worsened by accelerating climate change, was the subject of the first national study on how they affect the U.S. Dust storms were associated with a 4.8% increase in local admissions to ICUs on the day of the event. Respiratory admissions increased by 9.2% on the day of the storm and again by 7.5% five days later. This second increase could be due to several causes, the authors write, including a slowly worsening respiratory condition, a lack of access to care, or conditions with a longer incubation period such as meningitis or influenza. George Orwell once observed British civilization was “founded on coal.” The author of “1984” would hardly recognize his home country today. Coal, which fueled the factories, steam engines and power plants that made Britain the center of the Industrial Revolution, has all but disappeared from the United Kingdom. The worst of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States seemed to have passed in mid-May as governors began the phased reopening of their states from coast to coast. Restaurants, retailers, offices and manufacturers unlocked their doors. As they did, electricity demand — a vital sign for the economy — began to steadily increase. Grid operators like PJM Interconnection LLC and the Midcontinent Independent System Operator Inc., whose territories cover half the U.S., have seen power demand rebound over the past month and a half, aided by warming weather that has air conditioners humming. The Power Grid Is Getting Bigger, But Plants Are Shrinking

The delivery of a gas turbine doesn’t normally make the news. But the Siemens 9000HL model that arrived last week to the Keadby2 combined-cycle power plant in the U.K. is something special. Weighing in at just under 1.1 million pounds (497,000 kilograms), it’ll rotate 3,000 times a minute and generate 593 megawatts of power at peak, likely for decades.
