Impeachment fight may upend agenda — or not

By Geof Koss and Timothy Cama, E&E News reporters  •    •  Posted 2019-09-25 15:29:33

The White House yesterday threatened to bring the legislative process to a halt after House Democrats launched impeachment proceedings, injecting new brinkmanship into an increasingly tense Capitol Hill one week before government funding runs out. But lawmakers on both sides of the aisle didn’t expect much more gridlock within Congress, at least not until the impeachment process moves beyond the current inquiry by several House committees.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) today announced his intent to adopt California’s more stringent clean car standards. The announcement falls on the heels of New Mexico’s commitment yesterday to adopt California’s standards. It also comes after the Trump administration last week proposed revoking states’ legal authority under the Clean Air Act to set more stringent vehicle emissions rules than the federal government. Wheeler draws barbs for saying rollback won’t affect warming

By Maxine Joselow, E&E News reporter  •    •  Posted 2019-09-25 15:29:51

EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler claimed last week that the rollback of Obama-era clean car standards would have a negligible impact on global temperature rise. That’s technically true. The world’s largest offshore wind farm is nearly complete. It can power 1 million homes

By Hanna Ziady, CNN Business  •    •  Posted 2019-09-25 15:31:07

The world’s largest offshore wind farm is taking shape off the east coast of Britain, a landmark project that demonstrates one way to combat climate change at scale. Located 120 kilometers (75 miles) off England’s Yorkshire coast, Hornsea One will produce enough energy to supply 1 million UK homes with clean electricity when it is completed in 2020. The project spans an area that’s bigger than the Maldives or Malta, and is located farther out to see than any other wind farm. It consists of 174 seven-megawatt wind turbines that are each 100 meters tall. The blades have a circumference of 75 meters, and cover an area bigger than the London Eye observation wheel as they turn. [ read more … ]

California wants a carbon-free economy by 2045: Can floating offshore wind help it get there?

By Herman K. Trabish, Utility Dive  •    •  Posted 2019-09-25 15:31:24

Emerging floating offshore wind technologies could save California electricity customers billions in the next two decades and play a key role in achieving the state’s ambitious climate and renewable energy goals, a new report concludes. But the mechanics of floating wind remain unproven at scale and developers face multiple permitting and financing hurdles. Nevertheless, California could be where floating offshore wind (OSW) finally breaks into the U.S. market, developers and offshore wind researchers told Utility Dive. EV owners may not love solar panels so much after all

By Nic Querolo, Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2019-09-25 15:31:59

The overlap between consumers who buy electric vehicles and those who want solar panels on their roofs may not be so broad after all. While conventional wisdom has long held that EV drivers prefer to charge cars with clean energy, surveys that fed that belief targeted early adopters of the technologies who don’t necessarily represent the broadening demographic of today’s buyers, according to a report yesterday from BloombergNEF.
