As Earth faces climate catastrophe, US set to open nearly 200 power plants

owerful hurricanes. Record-breaking heatwaves. Droughts that bring ruin to farmers. Raging forest fires. The mass die-off of the world’s coral reefs. Food scarcity.  To avoid a climate change apocalypse, carbon dioxide emissions need to fall by as much as 45% from 2010 levels by 2030,  according to the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.  Instead, utilities and energy companies are continuing to invest heavily in carbon-polluting natural gas. An exclusive analysis by USA TODAY finds that across the United States there are as many as 177 natural gas power plants currently planned, under construction or announced. Offshore Consortium Awards Floating Wind R&D Contract To NREL

The National Offshore Wind Research and Development Consortium has selected the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for contract negotiation for the consortium’s first offshore wind research and development (R&D) technology award. The project is designed to improve the economic feasibility of floating wind farm technology. German drivers still love their gas guzzlers and not many of them are thinking about going electric any time soon. As the world’s leading automakers are gearing up to later this month show off their motors at a giant industry fair in Frankfurt, just 16% of drivers in Europe’s biggest economy considering a new car are thinking electric, according to a poll published by utility EON SE. Only the Czechs were less interested in buying an electric car.

California has been a leader in the fight to clean our air since one of my heroes, Ronald Reagan, was our governor. The Trump administration, for some reason, is hellbent on reversing decades of history and progress. Whether it is political pettiness, shortsightedness or just plain jealousy, I couldn’t tell you.
