Kan. county bans wind farms, curbs solar to protect aviation
Large-scale wind power developments would not be allowed and commercial solar installations would be restricted in Sedgwick County under a proposal approved yesterday by the county commission. The Sedgwick County Commission made the decision to protect aviation interests after planner Dave Yearout told commissioners that large windmills can affect airport and flight operations within a 5-mile radius, The Wichita Eagle reported. The state of Connecticut is looking to purchase up to 2,000 megawatts of offshore wind power. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said Monday it had released a request for proposals for offshore wind power as required by a new state law.

Calif. utility to build 3,000 chargers for buses, trucks
A California utility will help build 3,000 charging stations for buses, trucks, forklifts, and other medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles. San Diego Gas & Electric Co. (SDG&E), a subsidiary of Sempra Energy, gained approval yesterday from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) for the $107 million project. [ read more … ]
Flying turbine makes 1st trip offshore in Norway
A carbon-fiber kite tethered to a buoy floating in waters 761 feet deep took flight in a test to prove that the future of offshore wind power might fly through the air. The kite, owned by the Alphabet Inc. subsidiary Makani and backed by Royal Dutch Shell PLC, completed its first demonstration about 6.2 miles off the coast of Norway in the North Sea. [ read more … ]

Inslee ends climate-centered White House run
Jay Inslee withdrew from the 2020 Democratic presidential race yesterday, ending the first major climate change-centered candidacy for the White House. The progressive Washington governor and former congressman, who frequently stated his belief on the campaign trail that it’s necessary to make climate “job one” or “it won’t get done,” announced his decision in a live interview on MSNBC’s late-night “The Rachel Maddow Show,” a major venue for liberal candidates in the 2020 election cycle.

Sanders reveals climate plan amid plateauing polls
Sen. Bernie Sanders is expected today to unveil his plan to address climate change, and a preview of his proposal reveals a vision that’s consistent with his eat-the-rich rhetoric — as he would make wealthy Americans, fossil fuel companies and the Pentagon pay for much of it. In the same populist vein, the Vermont senator and 2020 Democratic contender also wants to break the fossil fuel industry and shift the United States toward publicly owned renewable energy sources. That includes a pledge to reach “100 percent sustainable energy for electricity and transportation by no later than 2030” and “complete decarbonization” of the U.S. economy by 2050, according to the plan.
