US Wind Boom Faces New Threat From Proposed Tower Tariffs

By Karl-Erik Stromsta, Green Tech Media  •    •  Posted 2019-08-02 04:34:16

There’s never a good time for import tariffs when it comes to keeping costs down for renewables projects. But for the U.S. wind market, the timing of newly proposed tariffs on imported turbine towers could not be much worse. Earlier this month, a group of domestic tower manufacturers asked the U.S. International Trade Commission to impose stiff tariffs on several major tower-exporting countries — Canada, Indonesia, South Korea and Vietnam. His framework, built on principles like innovation and social equity, includes elements such as carbon pricing, regional plans, equitable transitions, supply chains and workforce. [ read more … ]

AWEA Reports On Q2: Wind Project Pipeline Keeps Growing

By North America Wind Power  •    •  Posted 2019-08-02 04:34:36

U.S. wind farm development activity rose to a new high point in the second quarter of 2019, according to new data released by the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). Strong consumer demand from Fortune 500 businesses and utilities, as well as calls from multiple states for offshore projects, added to wind power’s growing development pipeline, says AWEA. At the same time, wind turbine manufacturers saw an increasing number of factory orders for more powerful wind turbines, capable of powering almost twice the number of homes as an average wind turbine installed in the past few years. EV tax credit fight sparks lobbying frenzy

By Timothy Cama, E&E News reporter  •    •  Posted 2019-08-02 04:34:52

Automakers are expanding lobbying efforts to extend the federal tax credit for buying electric vehicles, as the oil industry and conservatives push back against further incentives. General Motors Co. and Tesla Inc. both disclosed hiring lobbying firms recently to focus on advocating for the “Driving America Forward Act,” bipartisan legislation that would augment an existing $7,500 consumer tax credit on each company’s first 200,000 electric cars with a $7,000 credit for the next 400,000 cars. Both companies recently became ineligible for the credits. [ read more … ]
