New York City Blackout Caused by Power Grid’s Protection System Failing

Consolidated Edison Inc. said in a statement that the relay protection system that is supposed to isolate faulty cables failed to shut down a 13,000-volt cable on West 64th Street. Power networks covering 42 blocks of the city then went down. FirstEnergy Solutions closes in on $1B nuke subsidy as Ohio lawmakers streamline legislation

The Ohio Senate GOP leadership on Monday unveiled a streamlined bill that would subsidize old coal and nuclear plants as well as utility-scale solar, while permanently freezing the state’s renewable energy standard at 5.5% by the end of 2019. Current law requires renewable energy to account for 12.5% of power sold by 2027. The rewritten House Bill 6 would also effectively kill customer energy efficiency programs by replacing utility customer charges and funding them with new, lower charges to subsidize old power plants. $1B Montana pumped storage hydro project secures funding

Absaroka Energy has lined up financing for a planned 400 MW pumped hydro project near Martinsdale, Montana, through an ​equity investment from Denmark’s Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP). The $1 billion closed loop Gordon Butte Pumped Storage Hydro project has already received construction and operation permits from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and developers say construction could start next year. Minnesota is one of several states leading the way in advancing and promoting clean energy. The state met its goal of using 25 percent renewable energy seven years ahead of schedule and participated in National Clean Energy Week last year. The climate problem won’t be solved by one political party alone, and it won’t be solved by one president alone. From President George H.W. Bush, who helped bring international attention and action to the problem, to President Barack Obama, who pursued a strong executive approach with the Clean Power Plan, we’ve learned the limits of what one president can do.
