Red states lead the switch to renewables

State energy regulators in Republican strongholds are forcing utilities to look at the improved economics of solar and wind, facilitating the switch to an electric grid that is reliant on mostly renewable energy. “If you look at wind development, it is the middle of the country, the midwestern, solidly red states, that have made most of the investment in wind energy, and to me that is completely a non-political issue,” said Devashree Saha, a senior associate with the World Resources Institute. U.S. Democratic Lawmakers Declare Climate Emergency

Democratic lawmakers, including six presidential candidates, on Tuesday unveiled a Congressional resolution declaring a climate change emergency to spur “sweeping reforms” to stem a dangerous rise in global temperatures. The non-binding resolution, introduced by Democratic Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Earl Blumenauer and Senator Bernie Sanders, “demands a national, social, industrial and economic mobilization” to “halt, reverse, mitigate and prepare for the consequences of the climate emergency and to restore the climate for future generations.” [ read more … ]

Twenty-three U.S. states urge Trump to drop vehicle fuel-efficiency freeze

An Oregon Senate committee is considering temporarily banning from the Capitol a Republican senator who said “hell is coming to visit you personally” to the body’s president during a standoff over a climate change bill. An independent investigator told the committee yesterday that state Sen. Brian Boquist’s threats against state police and the Senate president created an unsafe work environment and suggested he be at least temporarily banned from the Capitol. [ read more … ]
