Midwest utilities embrace big solar, push back on rooftops

Consider a map of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator’s (MISO) interconnection queue, where there’s almost 200 solar projects — representing about 30,000 megawatts — being developed and waiting to tie into the grid. While just a fraction of those projects will get built, new ones will continue to populate the MISO list as utilities are proposing thousands of megawatts of solar, in part to replace old coal plants. Consumers Energy plans for more than 5,000 MW of solar over 20 years. Northern Indiana Public Service Co. is eyeing 1,500 MW in the next decade. [ read more … ]

Investors face $1.2T in costs from climate change inaction

Inaction on climate change could cost the world’s top companies $1.2 trillion over the next 15 years, according to a new report from the United Nations (UN) Environment Finance Initiative project reflecting the input of 20 institutional investors from 11 countries. The report calls on corporations and financial institutions to develop long-range assessments of climate change-associated risks and opportunities. Large portfolios mean many institutional investors “face exposure to risk across sectors, geographies and financial instruments, while at the same time financing the development of the real economy.” [ read more … ]

Offshore industry: ‘We really need to be serious’ on climate

The offshore oil and gas industry called last week for prioritizing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while reiterating its view that fossil fuels remain vital to the world’s energy mix, even as renewables grow.Influential executives at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) — one of the largest annual gatherings of oil and gas professionals — grappled with the industry’s public image as they discussed goals around delivering the energy people want and attracting potential employees.

Maine Governor signs bill requiring utilities to disclose data

Democratic Maine Gov. Janet Mills has signed bills into law that require electric utilities to provide more information to their customers. The laws require utilities to provide a 10-year history of rates to customers and to clearly display consumer assistance lines on billing statements. The laws allow the Public Utilities Commission to require corrections for misleading, deceptive or inaccurate information. [ read more … ]

Company cancels plans for 49-turbine Mich. project

A company says it’s not moving forward on plans for a wind farm in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula due to factors including delays in the planning process. Renewable Energy Systems recently announced it has decided to stop development of the Summit Lake Wind Project in Baraga County’s L’Anse Township. A release from the company said the project, which was proposed last year, no longer made sense financially and logistically.
