Cheap Renewables Shave $10 Trillion Off Cost to Curb Warming

The cost of reaching global climate goals is falling rapidly as wind and solar prices plummet and policy makers push electrification as the main tool to cut pollution, the International Renewable Energy Agency said. The group known as Irena revised down its estimates for global investments needed by 2050 in clean energy to meet targets under the Paris Agreement on climate change. The Abu Dhabi-based group now says $115 trillion is needed, down from $125 trillion a year ago, reflecting lower costs to build wind and solar farms. [ read more … ]

Exclusive: United States sets sights on China in new electric vehicle push

U.S. government officials plan to meet with executives from automakers and lithium miners in early May as part of a first-of-its-kind effort to launch a national electric vehicle supply chain strategy, according to three sources familiar with the matter. While Volkswagen AG, Tesla Inc and other electric-focused automakers and battery manufacturers are expanding in the United States and investing billions in the new technology, they are reliant on mineral imports without a major push to develop more domestic mines and processing facilities.

Official: Air Force is planning for climate risks

Climate change was a driving force in the Syrian conflict, a top Air Force official told lawmakers last week. Gen. David Goldfein, the Air Force’s chief of staff, also told a Senate panel that it was important for the armed service branch to prepare for climate change around the world. Goldfein was responding to question from Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who has been pressing military officials on climate risks and creating a congressional record that runs contrary to White House efforts to cast doubt on the link between national security and climate change. Judge shoots down N.M. ranchers’ claims against Air Force

A federal judge has grounded the claims of New Mexico ranchers who blamed the Air Force for earth-hugging overflights and loss of a wind energy lease. U.S. Court of Federal Claims Judge Thomas Wheeler on Friday dismissed the two-pronged Fifth Amendment takings challenge brought by ranchers Buddy and Donna Taylor. [ read more … ]

Nebraska Energy, environmental agencies to merge
