A look into Big Oil’s fight against electric cars

Last November, oil industry representatives huddled with conservative state lawmakers at a hotel a few blocks from the White House. The gathering was a covert affair. Reporters were barred from the room. Attendees cast votes in secret. The meeting was organized by the American Legislative Exchange Council, the conservative bill-writing group. A topic of discussion was the federal electric vehicle tax credit, which allows people who purchase EVs to receive up to $7,500 after filing their tax returns.

Wis. governor proposes carbon-free electricity by 2050

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) has a plan that would require the state’s power to be carbon-free by midcentury. The proposal would also increase renewable energy and conservation funding. Fossil fuels are currently used to generate more than three-quarters of Wisconsin’s electricity, and about 15 percent of the state’s electricity is generated by a nuclear plant. [ read more … ]

‘Green New Deal’ crusaders back kids’ climate case

The young activists pushing lawmakers for a “Green New Deal” are throwing their weight behind peers fighting climate change in the courtroom. The charitable arm of the Sunrise Movement last week urged federal judges to greenlight litigation from 21 kids and young adults attempting to hold the U.S. government accountable for climate change impacts. The high-stakes lawsuit, Juliana v. United States, is before the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which could either halt the case or allow a trial to proceed in Oregon. [ read more … ]

Elon Musk Blindsided Tesla Staff With Store-Closing Plans

Tesla Inc. Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk caught many employees by surprise with his announcement last week that the electric-car maker would close most stores and shift to online-only sales, according to three people familiar with the matter. Many sales personnel found out about the decision when Tesla published a public blog post Thursday afternoon, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing sensitive matters. One of the key people involved in implementing the online sales strategy is Sanjay Shah, who has taken on additional responsibilities since his arrival from Inc. last summer, the people said. Climate change is Jay Inslee’s top priority in Washington. How will it play in 2020?

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee launched his bid for president Friday to address what he called in his first campaign video “the most urgent challenge of our time.” While the crowded field for the Democratic nomination already includes five senators co-sponsoring the ambitious Green New Deal resolution, Inslee is prioritizing climate change to the exclusion of other issues. He said “climate change” or “global warming” in the video at least 10 times.
