Wheeler: ‘I have some questions’ about climate report

Kevin Bogardus, E&E News reporter  •    •  Posted 2018-11-29 04:42:43

Wheeler, speaking at an event hosted by The Washington Post, piled on to efforts to downplay the study. “I think a lot of the criticism that you’re seeing from the Trump administration on the report is the emphasis from the media on the ‘worst case’ scenario,” Wheeler said, adding that the report downplayed innovation that has helped reduce carbon emissions. The House will vote Friday on a broad tax package that includes more than a dozen energy tax breaks, along with technical corrections to last year’s tax overhaul and temporary tax breaks for victims of recent natural disasters. Renewable-energy advocates are pushing Congress to create a tax credit for power-storage systems, a move that may help unlock new opportunities for wind and solar nationwide. A storage tax credit would boost the grid’s resiliency and reliability, they say, key buzzwords in the Trump administration’s campaign to save struggling nuclear and coal-fired power plants. But so far, congressional Republicans aren’t biting. [ read more … ]

By Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2018-11-29 04:44:03

Developing countries have added more clean power capacity than fossil fuel generation for the first time ever, charging ahead of wealthier nations in the global green energy push, according to Bloomberg NEF. Wind and solar generation accounted for just over half of the 186 gigawatts of new power capacity in developing nations last year, according to BNEF’s annual Climatescope survey released yesterday. Not only that, they’ve added more clean energy generation than developed economies, increasing zero-carbon capacity by 114 gigawatts compared with about 63 gigawatts in richer countries [ read more … ]
