Debra Kahn, E&E News reporter  •    •  Posted 2018-09-17 04:20:24

California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) announced plans today to launch a satellite to monitor heat-trapping emissions, fulfilling a pledge he made immediately after the election of Donald Trump. “With science still under attack and the climate threat growing, we’re launching our own damn satellite,” Brown said at the Global Climate Action Summit, a two-day conference in San Francisco aimed at strengthening emissions-reduction commitments from governments and the private sector. California Had Its Own Climate Summit. Now What?

By Brad Plumer. New York Times  •    •  Posted 2018-09-17 04:20:48

While the California conference did see a flurry of announcements by states, cities and businesses from around the world, some of them seemed more aspirational than anything else, at least for now. It is unlikely that this meeting, by itself, will drastically alter the trajectory of the world’s emissions. [ read more … ]

Climate conference shows divide among Democrats over how to counter global warming

By Dino Grandoni, Washington Post  •    •  Posted 2018-09-17 04:21:07

The organizers of a climate-change conference here in California wanted their three-day summit to be a repudiation of President Trump. And during many speeches, and commitments from cities and companies to reduce their impact on the environment, it was. But at other times both in and outside the convention center in San Francisco, activists protested against the current Democratic approach. The clash marked a high-profile schism between the middle- and far-left segments of the Democratic coalition about how forcefully to address climate change [ read more … ]

EPA today urged a federal appeals court to keep a major lawsuit on the Obama-era Clean Power Plan on hold as the agency moves forward with a replacement. Earlier this month, 17 states and other parties asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to resume the litigation, accusing the agency of employing legal tactics to avoid regulating heat-trapping emissions [ read more … ]

Nudged by FERC, federal appeals court upholds Illinois nuclear subsidies

By Gavin Bade, Utility Dive  •    •  Posted 2018-09-17 04:22:02

A federal appeals court on Thursday upheld nuclear energy subsidies put in place by Illinois, ruling they do not interfere with the federal government’s jurisdiction over interstate power markets. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit ruled that the Illinois Zero Emission Credit (ZEC) program does not overstep the state’s authority because it does not require power plants to participate in interstate power markets, a precedent established in the 2016 Supreme Court case, Hughes v. Talen Energy. A similar court case is pending in New York. [ read more … ]
