The post-Powelson era began Friday at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, leaving the agency with just four commissioners and the possibility of evenly split, no-decision, 2-2 votes on contentious natural gas pipeline and electricity market matters.Powelson warns against allowing politics to creep into deliberations of the commission, which has traditionally practiced independence from outside political pressure and made decisions based on a defensible legal record. Poll: Nearly half of voters oppose Trump’s vehicle emissions plan

A large number of voters are opposed to the Trump administration’s plan to weaken vehicle emissions standards, a new poll released Thursday found. Nearly half of voters polled, 49 percent, in the Politico–Morning Consult survey said they were either strongly against or somewhat against the plan to roll back the Obama-era national standards. Report: FERC working with White House, NSC on coal and nuclear bailout

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is working with the White House, Department of Energy and the National Security Council to identify power plants that are critical to the grid, FERC Chief of Staff Anthony Pugliese told a nuclear conference this week, according to E&E News. Identifying those plants is the first step in a White House plan to save uneconomic coal and nuclear plants from retirement detailed in a leaked NSC memo this spring. FERC had not previously disclosed it was working with the other agencies on the effort. [ read more … ]

BLM advances another major project for Calif. desert

The Bureau of Land Management has completed a draft analysis of a massive solar project in the Southern California desert that would rank among the nation’s largest photovoltaic power plants. The agency will publish a draft environmental impact statement (EIS) in tomorrow’s Federal Register for the Desert Quartzite Solar Project, which would cover about 3,800 acres of federally managed lands in Riverside County, just southwest of Blythe, Calif. Trump says U.S. is best on energy. Is he right?

“Coal exports — clean coal — increased 60 percent last year,” Trump told the executives. “American oil production is at an all-time high. As I said before, we’re the leading country in the world right now for energy. EPA has no records to support Pruitt’s warming claims

EPA has not produced any scientific evidence to support the claims of former EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt that humans are not primary contributors to climate change. Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility has fought EPA in court for more than a year to produce scientific evidence for Pruitt’s claims, which he made on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” [ read more … ]
