Energy Secretary Rick Perry on Tuesday was busy tweeting about the top five states for wind energy, while a top Interior Department official was addressing climate skeptics on efforts to advance mining and drilling. Perry tweeted a list of the five states leading the country on wind energy. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), which had to cope with triple-digit temperatures in cities such as Dallas and Austin, reported several all-time demand peaks in July. Two environmental groups want Iowa regulators to require that MidAmerican Energy Co.’s 100 percent renewable energy goal include coal plant retirements, more solar power and other emissions-free resources besides wind. The Iowa Environmental Council and the Environmental Law and Policy Center submitted joint comments to the Iowa Utilities Board on Monday recommending that the utility’s 591-megawatt Wind XII project — the final piece of its 100 percent renewable vision — only be included in rates if the utility agrees to shut down coal units. Musk Mulls Taking Tesla Private, Valuing Company at $82 Billion

Elon Musk said he’s considering taking Tesla Inc. private in a radical step that, if successful, would ease pressure on the money-losing automaker. The announcement, made initially via Twitter, stunned investors and sent Tesla’s stock price soaring as much as 13 percent.
