New Jersey significantly altered the future of its energy sector on Thursday, passing two bills that set ambitious goals for expanding renewable power and curtailing greenhouse gases in the state. The bills, which require power companies in New Jersey to generate 50 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and subsidize existing nuclear power plants, mark one of the biggest new policy steps that any state has taken toward cutting greenhouse gases since President Trump was elected. New Jersey Revives Plan for Wind Farm Off Atlantic City Coast

New Jersey lawmakers have revived a long-stalled plan to build a wind farm off the coast of Atlantic City. Both houses of the state Legislature approved a bill Thursday allowing the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities to reconsider a 24-megawatt project by Fishermen’s Energy LLC that was rejected under Republican Governor Chris Christie. The measure gives regulators 90 days to act on Fishermen’s application, which will be filed in May, the company’s secretary Paul Gallagher said. [ read more … ]

Senate confirms Wheeler as EPA deputy

The Senate yesterday confirmed former Senate aide and energy lobbyist Andrew Wheeler to become EPA deputy administrator. The vote was 53-45. Wheeler will become the agency’s No. 2 as revelations of ethical wrongdoing continue to plague Administrator Scott Pruitt. If Pruitt were to leave, Wheeler could take over in an acting capacity.
