More states hosting ‘people’s’ hearings on clean power plan repeal

Two more states have announced they intend to hold public hearings on U.S. EPA’s proposal to repeal the Clean Power Plan, former President Obama’s signature climate regulation. Maryland and Delaware will join New York in hosting a “People’s Hearing” on the new administration’s plans. While EPA chief Scott Pruitt has scheduled hearings on the repeal in several cities, he failed to set any on the East Coast. [ read more … ]

Northeastern states sue EPA for ‘failing to act’ on smog

New York and seven other Northeastern states are suing U.S. EPA regarding its refusal to undertake a sweeping expansion of regional ozone reduction efforts. The lawsuit, filed last week, challenges the agency’s turndown last fall of a 2013 petition to add another nine states — mostly in the South and Midwest — to the Ozone Transport Region. North Dakota Wind Energy: Mostly All Benefit

A 2017 study by North Dakota State University and the Utility Shareholders of North Dakota estimated that in 2016 $174.8 million was generated in business activity by the wind industry. The study, “Wind Energy Industry’s Contribution to the North Dakota Economy in 2016,” estimated that $57 million was statewide personal income and $55 was generated in the retail sector. Report: Tesla’s Australian battery project steps in after coal units fail

Tesla already attracted attention when it rolled out the Hornsdale storage project in record time, but now the finished storage system is drawing praise for its work in stabilizing the grid. When the coal facility’s Unit 3 went down, the plant’s Unit 1 ultimately replaced the power, but not before Tesla’s Hornsdale battery injected more than 7 MW onto the grid, according to the Gladstone Observer. While Hornsdale storage project is much smaller than the almost-1,700 MW coal plant, it can rapidly respond to operational issues in order to maintain grid reliability.
