Trade Commission Will Hear Solar Tariff Case

By Diane Cardwell, The New York Times  •    •  Posted 2017-08-14 06:23:48

An unusual trade case that could upend the domestic solar market is set for a hearing on Tuesday before the United States International Trade Commission in Washington. Petitioners in the case — two American affiliates of overseas solar equipment manufacturers — are seeking steep tariffs on foreign-made cells and modules to counteract the low price of imports, often from Chinese manufacturers [ read more … ]

A bipartisan group of senators is expressing “deep concern” over a federal agency considering potential trade penalties for imported solar panel technology. The Friday letter spearheaded by Sens. Republicans, Democrats join forces to protect rooftop solar installers

By John Siciliano, Washington Examiner  •    •  Posted 2017-08-14 06:24:17

Republican and Democratic lawmakers on Friday defended U.S. installers of rooftop solar panels and made an effort to beat back a pending decision that could make imported solar panels more expensive. Bipartisan letters from 16 senators and 53 congressman were sent to International Trade Commission Chairman Rhonda Schmidtlein, and urged the agency to reject a petition by Chinese and German-owned companies that manufactured solar panels and cells in the U.S., but have since gone bankrupt.

Two major reports surfaced last week warning of skyrocketing global temperatures, but President Trump and U.S. EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt are insisting the threat is not dire. Chile’s Energy Transformation Is Powered by Wind, Sun and Volcanoes

By ERNESTO LONDOÑO, New York Times  •    •  Posted 2017-08-14 06:25:31

With the ability to power roughly 165,000 homes, the new plant is yet another step in Chile’s clean energy transformation. This nation’s rapidly expanding clean energy grid, which includes vast solar fields and wind farms, is one of the most ambitious in a region that is decisively moving beyond fossil fuels. Latin America already has the world’s cleanest electricity, having long relied on dams to generate a large share of its energy needs, according to the World Bank. [ read more … ]

After Failure of SC Nuke Plant, Backers Seek Federal Aid

By Matthew Daly, Associated Press  •    •  Posted 2017-08-14 06:25:51

Proponents of nuclear power are pushing to revive a failed project to build two reactors in South Carolina, arguing that the demise of the $14 billion venture could signal doom for an industry that supplies one-fifth of the nation’s electricity. Even though the nation’s 99 commercial nuclear reactors supply about 20 percent of U.S. electricity, no new nuclear plant has been built from scratch in more than 30 years. Supporters were alarmed when two South Carolina utilities halted construction on a pair of reactors that once were projected to usher in a new generation of nuclear power to provide reliable, cost-effective, carbon-free electricity for decades.
