Rooftop Solar Dims Under Pressure From Utility Lobbyists

Over the past six years, rooftop solar panel installations have seen explosive growth — as much as 900 percent by one estimate. That growth has come to a shuddering stop this year, with a projected decline in new installations of 2 percent, according to projections from Bloomberg New Energy Finance. A number of factors are driving the reversal, from saturation in markets like California to financial woes at several top solar panel makers. But the decline has also coincided with a concerted and well-funded lobbying campaign by traditional utilities, which have been working in state capitals across the country to reverse incentives for homeowners to install solar panels. Apple to build second renewables-powered data center in Denmark

Apple Inc said Monday it will spend 6 billion Danish crowns ($921 million) on a new data center in Denmark, its second in the Nordic country to run entirely on renewable energy Facebook Inc in January also announced plans to build a data center in Denmark, only its third outside of the United States.

Oncor is meant to augment Berkshire Hathaway Energy, whose collection of utilities delivers power to 11.6 million customers across the West and Midwest, as well as in Britain and Canada. Berkshire first bought control of what was then MidAmerican Energy in 2000. It has since become an assembly of utilities, gas pipelines and renewable energy assets like solar and wind generators. Reinforcing his intent to combat climate change and remain a major political player on the issue, California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) yesterday announced his state would host an international global warming summit next year. The summit would mark the first time an American state has hosted an international climate change conference with the direct goal of supporting the Paris Agreement, according to Brown’s office.
