Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds touted wind and other renewable resources in the state during a recent trip to Washington. Last year Iowa generated 36.6 percent of its electricity from wind, the most ever for any state. That figure is expected to keep growing, with the state’s two largest utilities having already started $4 billion in additional wind expansion projects. [ read more … ]

Volvo Cars on Wednesday became the first mainstream automaker to sound the death knell of the internal combustion engine, saying that all the models it introduces starting in 2019 will be either hybrids or powered solely by batteries. The decision is the boldest commitment by any major car company to technologies that currently represent a small share of the total vehicle market but are increasingly viewed as essential to combating climate change and urban pollution. BLM starts bid to revamp land-use planning, NEPA reviews

The Bureau of Land Management wants public input on its forthcoming revisions to land-use planning procedures and environmental reviews as part of an effort to replace an Obama-era rule Congress killed in the spring. The request for comments comes a little more than three months after Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, in an internal memorandum obtained by E&E News, directed BLM to “identify and implement” revisions to land-use planning and reviews required by the National Environmental Policy Act. Germany produced record 35 percent of power from renewables in first half

Germany raised the proportion of its power produced by renewable energy to 35 percent in the first half of 2017 from 33 percent the previous year, according to the BEE renewable energy association. Germany is aiming to phase out its nuclear power plants by 2022. Its renewable energy has been rising steadily over the last two decades thanks in part to the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) which was reformed this year to cut renewable energy costs for consumers. 58% believe humans cause warming — poll

Most Americans believe climate change is caused by human activities, according to a survey conducted by Yale University’s Program on Climate Change Communication. Seventy percent of Americans believe climate change is happening, and 58 percent believe it is caused by human emissions, the highest number since researchers began the biannual survey in 2008.
