Climate March Draws Thousands of Protesters Alarmed by Trump’s Environmental Agenda

By Dave Horn, New York Times  •    •  Posted 2017-05-01 06:30:26

Tens of thousands of demonstrators, alarmed at what they see as a dangerous assault on the environment by the Trump administration, poured into the streets here on Saturday to sound warnings both planetary and political about the Earth’s warming climate. Starting at the foot of the Capitol, the protesters marched to the White House, surrounding the mansion while President Trump was inside on his 100th day in office. Once there, the demonstrators let out a collective roar, meant to symbolically drown out the voices of the administration’s climate change deniers.

Court suspends litigation on climate rule in win for Trump

Amanda Reilly, E&E News reporter  •    •  Posted 2017-05-01 06:30:47

A federal court’s decision early last Friday to pause litigation over the Clean Power Plan is a win for the Trump administration, making it unlikely that judges will issue a ruling on its legality as U.S. EPA reviews the controversial program. The rule was the centerpiece of the Obama administration’s domestic climate change agenda and required states to develop plans to lower carbon dioxide emissions from existing power plants [ read more … ]

Top Trump Aides Clash on Legal Risks of Paris Climate Accord

By Jennifer A Dlouhy, Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2017-05-01 06:31:31

Senior advisers to Donald Trump were divided over the Paris climate accord in a meeting Thursday, as Cabinet members and staffers considered whether staying in the pact could legally jeopardize the president’s regulatory rollbacks, according to people familiar with the high-level gathering. The split means Trump’s staff could end up giving the president dueling advice, with one camp of advisers urging the U.S. to stay in the treaty and another urging an exit. The White House has said a decision on whether to remain in the pact will be made by the end of next month, when world leaders gather for the Group of Seven summit in Italy. [ read more … ]

Wind Power Gets a Leg-Up in Biggest U.S. Electricity Market

By Naureen Malik, Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2017-05-01 06:33:15

Wind may have just gotten a boost in the biggest U.S. electricity market. New rules requiring power producers to ensure supplies are available all year round are giving some an incentive to use more wind. The first test will come at next month’s auction by PJM Interconnection LLC — the grid operator covering the region from Chicago to Washington. [ read more … ]

Tesla Is Halting Door-to-Door Sales for SolarCity Amid Slowdown

By Dana Hull, Bloomberg  •    •  Posted 2017-05-01 06:33:36

Tesla Inc. is doing away with SolarCity Corp.’s door-to-door sales business as it works to integrate the rooftop solar company it bought for $2 billion last year. “After careful consideration, we believe this decision reflects what most of our prospective customers prefer, and will result in a better experience for them,” Tesla said in an emailed statement late Friday. By The Associated Press  •    •  Posted 2017-05-01 06:32:33

Iowa’s largest utility is in the midst of a $3.6 billion investment in wind power with a goal of producing 100 percent of its energy from renewable sources. MidAmerican Energy plans to build 1,000 more turbines over the next couple of years on top of the more than 2,000 it already has around the state, the Des Moines Register reported. When it’s completed, the utility’s share of its energy that comes from renewable sources will jump from 55 percent to nearly 90 percent. [ read more … ]

Laying a road map for states, liberal senators introduce bill to end U.S. fossil fuel use by 2050

By Juliet Eilperin, Washington Post  •    •  Posted 2017-05-01 06:36:09

Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) introduced legislation Thursday that calls on the U.S. to transition off fossil fuels by 2050, hoping to spur action on the state and local level, even as the Trump administration pushes for expanded coal, oil and natural gas production. The 100×50 Act would impose new federal mandates requiring vehicles in the United States to release zero carbon emissions, while barring federal approval of oil and gas pipelines in the country, while also establishing an auction of “climate bonds” that would raise money to support renewable energy projects. The measure would also provide job training for low-income Americans and Americans of color, as well as those in coal communities, to work in the renewable energy sector. [ read more … ]
