Coalition Welcomes Washington Governor Jay Inslee and Iowa Governor Terry Branstad as the Coalition’s New Leadership Team

The Governors’ Wind Energy Coalition today welcomed Washington Governor Jay Inslee and Iowa Governor Terry Branstad as its new chairman and vice chairman.

“States continue to play a leading role the developing the nation’s renewable energy resources, and capturing the jobs and economic benefits that these growing clean energy industries provide,” said Governor Inslee. “Washington state’s wind energy industry has attracted more than $5.7 billion in investment, since 2001 – creating thousands of jobs, supporting our rural communities and reducing emissions from our electricity sector. I look forward to working with Governor Branstad and our Coalition colleagues to promote federal and state policies that will help the wind energy industry continue to diversify our nation’s energy portfolio.”

The Governors’ Wind Energy Coalition was founded in 2010 and consists of 23 Democratic and Republican governors from every region of the country, working together to develop the nation’s wind energy resources..

“Iowa is reaping the benefits of wind energy and demonstrating that wind is an important component of an all-of-the-above energy strategy,” said Governor Branstad. “Nearly 30 percent of Iowa’s electricity now comes from wind energy and thousands of Iowans are directly connected to the wind energy industry. We are tapping a renewable energy resource that continues to strengthen Iowa’s economy with rewarding careers in rural communities, investments that benefit land owners and local school districts, and an expanding supply chain of local businesses. I look forward to working with Governor Inslee and other governors across the country to ensure that our nation effectively utilizes this renewable source of energy.”

The Governors Wind Energy Coalition has recently advocated for the Congress to extend the federal renewable energy production and investment tax credits, and for federal policies to promote transmission development to support onshore and offshore wind energy development.
