Governors Release 111(d) Letter to EPA Administrator

The coalition’s chairman and vice chairman today released a letter to Gina McCarthy, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today, expressing their support for wind energy as an eligible measure for states to utilize to comply with the expected proposed carbon emission rule later next month. The governors wrote:

“We urge the EPA to appropriately recognize wind energy and other renewable energy sources that can reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, EPA should give states flexibility in meeting EPA requirements, expedite approval of state plans, reduce state and federal administrative burdens, and provide credit for the clean energy investments that have already been made to improve our nation’s energy future.

“On behalf of the coalition, we respectfully urge you to support wind energy’s potential to further reduce carbon emissions while helping to maintain the reliability and affordability of the nation’s electricity system, ” South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard and Washington Governor Jay Inslee wrote in their letter to Administrator McCarthy.

##

The Governors’ Wind Energy Coalition is a bipartisan group of the nation’s governors who are dedicated to the development of the nation’s wind energy resources to meet America’s domestic energy demands in an environmentally responsible manner — while reducing the nation’s dependence on imported energy sources and stimulating state and national economic development.

Through its multi-state coordinated efforts, the Coalition is engaged in several national initiatives: encouraging sound national policy and legislation for the development and distribution of wind-generated energy; communicating, and demonstrating the value and benefits of wind energy to consumers, energy companies and policy makers; sharing state best practices in wind and renewable energy policy development; creating an environment of support for those who wish to develop responsible wind energy resources; and supporting development of infrastructure for the expansion of wind energy across the United States.
