Congress and federal agencies should take steps to foster the growth of electric vehicles, including updating a 46-year-old fuel economy law and expanding tax credits and other purchase subsidies, according to a Wednesday report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. The congressionally mandated report landed the same day that President Joe Biden announced a $2 trillion infrastructure plan that includes a call for a $174 billion investment in electric vehicles, a potentially enormous lift for reining in the emissions from transportation, the largest contributor to climate change in the U.S. The 468-page report, the latest in a series of NAS reviews of vehicle technologies, concluded that the next 14 years “could bring the most fundamental transformation in the 100-plus year history of the automobile.”
