Democratic Maine Gov. Janet Mills has tapped a Maine native who spent the last eight years working on climate and energy policy in Massachusetts to serve as her new energy office director.

Mills described Dan Burgess as a highly qualified leader on state energy policies and said she looks forward to working with him “to chart a path to Maine’s clean energy future.”

Burgess, who grew up on a dairy farm in Newport, Maine, worked on energy and climate policies under both current Republican Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and Democratic former Gov. Deval Patrick. He was deputy commissioner, and chief of staff, at the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources.

The 36-year-old holds a business degree from the University of Maine and a Master of Public Administration degree from Northeastern University.
