The rotor is strong enough to carry 10 elephants, Kolding, Denmark-based LM said in an e-mailed statement on Thursday. It was requested by Adwen Offshore SL for its AD 8-180 turbine, which has capacity to produce 8 megawatts of power. A soccer field must be at least 100 meters, according to FIFA rules.

The rotor will be tested in Aalborg, Denmark, before commercial production, which could be as early as 2018, LM spokesman Christopher Springham said by phone. It’s only intended for use offshore, with the rotors capable of moving at a top speed of 300 kilometers (186 miles) per hour, LM said.

Bigger rotors “allow more energy to be captured,” said Keegan Kruger, a wind analyst at Bloomberg New Energy Finance. “Rotor diameters have also seen an increase.”
