The German car industry has launched a preemptive PR campaign to keep gasoline and diesel cars around as long as possible. The fear is that the European Commission’s upcoming push to set tougher emissions rules for cars and trucks — called Euro 7 — will lead to Brussels announcing the end of internal combustion engine vehicles. That’s something Germany’s powerful automakers warn would undermine the country’s largest industry. “The European Commission is pursuing a policy of prohibition through a back door and wishes to avoid a frank and broad discussion,” said Hildegard Müller, president of the German Association of the Automotive Industry. The Commission insists it is currently just gathering data on how vehicles perform before drafting the proposal, and has no intention of taking the politically toxic step of mandating the end of the fossil fuel car
