Passenger electric vehicles across the globe are expected to rise from the 12 million currently on the road to 54 million by 2025 — but that trajectory is not enough to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in the transportation sector by 2050, according to a new report from BloombergNEF released Wednesday. Falling lithium-ion battery prices, improvements in technologies and expanding infrastructure are set to transform the auto industry over the coming decades, but further policy action such as tighter fuel economy standards is required to achieve a net-zero global fleet by mid-century.
