Democrat Tom Steyer to announce his political plans in Iowa today

Tom Steyer, a California billionaire who many expect to run for president, will announce his future political plans at a news conference in Des Moines today, according to a news release.

The event is putatively so that Steyer can talk about his stances on improving education, as a part of his “5 Rights” platform. But his release also said Steyer will will make an announcement concerning his political plans for 2019 and beyond

Steyer’s has had a presence in Iowa for several months: He’s behind NextGen. The national organization, which has an Iowa branch, was focused on climate change from 2014 to 2016 and shifted to a broader progressive agenda in 2017, making a major push for youth voter turnout in the 2018 election.

He also is behind the “Need to Impeach” campaign against President Donald Trump.

While Steyer has made multiple trips to Iowa — includingspeaking at the Des Moines Register’s Political Soapboxin August — his name recognition is still low compared to other potential 2020 candidates. One percent of voters said he was their first or second choice, and over 61 percent of likely Democratic caucusgoers said they were “not sure” if they had a favorable view of him, according to

December’s Des Moines Register/CNN/Mediacom Iowa Poll.His announcement will be at the Hilton in downtown Des Moines at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Steyer is also meeting with the Asian & Latino Coalition in the state Capitol at noon that day, and has an event at DMACC’s FFA Enrichment Center, an agricultural center in Ankeny at 7 p.m.
