ARIZONA UTILITY SETS 2050 CLEAN ENERGY TIMELINE: Arizona Public Service, the state’s largest utility, announced Wednesday it wants to deliver 100 percent clean, carbon-free electricity to customers by 2050. As part of that goal, the electricity provider set a near-term 2030 target for 65 percent clean energy and 45 percent renewable energy in its portfolio. It also said it will shut down all coal-fired generation — seven years ahead of schedule — by 2031. APS said it would rely on the Palo Verde nuclear power plant, as well as existing natural gas in the near term to supplement renewable sources, until technology advances allow the transition to clean-generating resources.
